Juntamos nossa voz de tristeza e de repúdio às vozes de todos os movimentos indígenas, dos povos das florestas, de movimentos de direitos humanos e a de todas as pessoas que, apesar do cenário atual no Brasil, ainda não perderam sua humanidade e se solidarizam com os sofrimentos das famílias de Bruno Pereira e Dom Phillips.
A atrocidade revelada pelos assassinatos de Bruno e de Dom desvela o que comunidades indígenas há muito denunciam: o processo permanente e constante de eliminação destes povos e daqueles que os defendem. Inicialmente, sentimos angústia pela falta de respostas sobre o que havia acontecido a Bruno e Dom. Agora, a angústia se transformou em doloroso luto. A mesma angústia e luto sentimos frente ao silêncio e inatividade tanto do Estado, quanto do governo, às reivindicações indígenas por território e direito à sua forma de existência.
As mortes de Bruno e Dom, o genocídio indígena, a destruição das florestas, a não definição em relação ao Marco Temporal são expressões de nossa degradação como civilização. De Chico Mendes até hoje, o Brasil mudou pouco ou nada, e continua sendo o país da barbárie, onde grileiros e congêneres seguem impondo uma realidade de morte e perseguição àqueles e àquelas que ousam desafiá-los.
Neste dia 16 de junho, muitas comunidades celebram o Corpus Christi. É um dia em que nossos irmãos e irmãs católicos romanos relembram o sacramento do sangue e do corpo de Jesus.
Para a tradição cristã, o sacramento está diretamente relacionado com a graça da vida e a possibilidade de reconciliação de Deus conosco. Inevitavelmente, a confecção dos tradicionais tapetes de Corpus Christi, que tanto nos encantam, estará marcada de profunda dor. Ao admirarmos a beleza, a diversidade e a criatividade dos tapetes, seremos levados a nos confrontar com a feiura da atual política de governo que, por sua indiferença, inoperância e insensibilidade desumanizantes, corroboram para que desfechos como o ocorrido com Bruno e Dom sejam cada vez mais frequentes - vide as declarações insensíveis e fora de qualquer lógica do chefe de Estado brasileiro.
Repudiamos, com veemência, todas essas declarações que pretendiam difamar Bruno e Dom, tentando transferir para eles responsabilidades que cabem ao Estado e ao Governo.
Às famílias de Bruno e de Dom, e às comunidades indígenas do Vale do Javari, nosso abraço e respeito.
Conclamamos aos nossos parceiros ecumênicos nacionais e internacionais que reforcem as pressões sobre o Estado para que medidas sejam tomadas no sentido de garantir proteção de todos os povos indígenas, em especial, dos povos indígenas do Vale do Javari. Da mesma forma, pedimos que a elucidação desses crimes não se esgote com a prisão dos executores, mas que se chegue aos verdadeiros mandantes - causa, e não efeito, dessas execuções.

Note on the murders of Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips
We add our outcry of sadness and repudiation to the voices of all the indigenous movements, forest peoples, and human rights movements. We join all those who, despite the current situation in Brazil, have not lost their humanity and are in solidarity with the suffering of the families of Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips.
The atrocity revealed by the murders of Bruno and Dom unveils what indigenous communities have long denounced: the permanent and constant process of elimination of these peoples and of those who defend them. Initially, we felt anguish for the lack of answers about what had happened to Bruno and Dom. Now the grief has turned into painful mourning. The same grief and mourning we feel when faced with the silence and recklessness of the Brazilian Government to the indigenous claims for territory and the right to their lifestyle.
The deaths of Bruno and Dom, the indigenous genocide, the destruction of the forests, and the lack of definition regarding the rule of law concerning the indigenous territories are expressions of our civilizational decay. Yet, from Chico Mendes until today, Brazil has changed little or nothing and continues to be a country of barbarism, where land grabbers and the like continue to impose a reality of death and persecution on those who dare to challenge them.
This June 16th, many communities celebrate Corpus Christi. It is a day when our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters remember the sacrament of the blood and body of Jesus.
For the Christian tradition, the sacrament relates directly to the grace of life and the possibility of God's reconciliation with us. Inevitably, the making of the traditional Corpus Christi carpets, which delight us so much, will be marked by deep sorrow. While we admire the tapestry's beauty, diversity, and creativity, we must confront the horror of the current Government's purposeful inaction. The indifference, deliberate incompetence, and dehumanizing insensitivity of the President lead to outcomes like the cruel murders of Bruno and Dom.
We vehemently repudiate all those statements intended to defame Bruno and Dom, trying to blame them when the responsibilities belong to the State and the Government.
To the families of Bruno and Dom and the indigenous communities of the Javari Valley, our embrace and respect.
We call on our national and international ecumenical partners to strengthen the pressure on the State so that measures be taken to guarantee the protection of all indigenous peoples, especially the indigenous peoples of the Javari Valley. Likewise, we demand a thorough investigation of these brutal crimes. The arrest of the perpetrators is not enough if the principals are not brought to justice.
